I just received on of these :
Image
http:/www.chumby.com

I order mine here :

http://www.international-orders.com/com ... 4/lang,en/

basically it is an alarm clock with wifi and a QVGA touch screen, that can play flash 'gadgets'

it is linux based and fully open/documented/'hackable'

I still need to figure out, the best way to use it for home automation purposes (as far as I can see, you can do 'stuff' in flash, use a built-in web server or write additional linux programs)

Your on a shopping spree right? :-) dont buy too much at the same time, it breaks the "wow" effect and you have to decide which one is the coolest to work on. (in my case that leaves the less interesting things on the shelves)

Watching http://www.intlo.com/flash/screenclean.swf is funny though.

Hi Marcel,
Some great Gadgets you posted and also interesting for connecting the Chumby and the Bluetooth Watch MBW-150 to Home automation.
Let us know more about it as soon as you figured it al out!

Brilliant device... I just ran into an old link I had today. I see a widget coming up that allows you to control your lights, monitor your house etc.etc.

It appears to be fully hackable:

If anyone has more information or links please post them here!

The chumby has a built in web server....

I added 3 simple cgi shell scripts to :
dim the screen
return to normal brightness
play/stream a .wav or .mp3 file

So, now if the (X10+DMX)lights turn off in my bedroom, the chumby automatically dims

Also, before, I used a UM7206 X10 universal module as my wake-up alarm (extremely loud[:)]).

Now, I stream a wav file to the chumby (from a NAS web server, you can also put the file on the chumby or an attached usb memory stick), instead...

http://192.168.1.56/cgi-bin/custom/play ... 1.61/1.wav

(which repeats every few minutes, until the motion detectors detect that I'm up. The alarm doesn't go off, if the system knows that I'm not home) :

(note that the chumby already has built in alarms and a 'night-mode', which I don't use)

for web server stuff :

see

http://wiki.chumby.com/mediawiki/index. ... mby_tricks

and

http://forum.chumby.com/index.php

to use it for home automation is not so easy, depending on what you want....

The chumby basically plays a 'slideshow' of 'flash lite' widgets.
Every x seconds, another widget is displayed (you can also manually 'freeze' the slideshow on a single widget)

You can define multiple series of widgets called channels and manually activate a channel (via button on top)...

Of course, you can 'easily' make a flash widget that just displays your current room temperature or x10 lights status or currently playing music track or something like that (if you have some type of (web?) server in your house that exposes such stuff)...
(note that flash has some special security/sandbox issues that you need to handle)

But, if you want to CONTROL something or if you want to display ALERTS (like caller id, email notification etc.), then you
either need to get rid of the flash and make your own linux application (cross compiled for ARM processor!)

or make a single flash widget that is always displayed and does whatever you want (i.e. handle touch screen presses to switch on/off lights, displays multiple pages of x10 status, alerts etc.)

so, if you want the possibility of ALERTS, that would mean that you can't also use the 100's of existing widgets..

if you don't care about alerting, then you can define multiple 'channels'

channel 1 -> News , clock, rss feeds, whatever...
channel 2 -> home control

and you can use the button on top of the chumby to select which channel you want...

hmm , http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/sams ... -hands-on/

seems they are busy with a frame too, no word on dates or prices but if it can fit inside a wall and have homeseer functionality.. it would be sweet..

I only use it as an alarm clock :

I only do 2 things from my home automation system

1) I switch the screen brightness to low if the bedroom lights turn off
2) I give it a command to play an mp3 file.
I use stephen fry's voice to wake me up : domoticaforum.eu/viewtopic.php?f=35&amp ... mp;p=33010

I don't use any gadgets etc. (other than displaying the time/date)
