Anyone here into 3D printing?

Post by Noel »

Anyone here into 3D printing?

I'm looking into some home build models, but have no clue what to get!

The printer must be able to print at least ABS.
My budget is around 1000 euro.

Any info / help on this is appreciated!

Thank you.

I have got some expierence.

Did not like the toothpaste systems around, to much time involved printing so i did build my own sla...
scroll arround to see my build on my google+ page or have a look at the build your own sla.

that is cool, i idn't like the extruder systems also because of the fiddeling arround with all the settings all the time and the resolution not to be very good compared to SLA.
I didn't knew it could be "so easy" with a projector and some steppers if i looked at the images correctly.
Also great other projects on your google+ page.

@ Vincenttor
Its actually one stepper.... :O)
and it yes it could be done with fairly low budget.

The only expensive thing you need is a dlp beamer, and the higher the lumens the shorter the layer takes to get hard.
i use a 3000 lumen acer beamer and it takes about 2sec for one layer.

And yes, life is keeping me occupied :D

But in the end, 3d printing is not like ctrl+p on your desktop... there are a lot of ifs and buts.
I would recommend to look for the best suitable printer for the job. What are your expectations
and what is the end goal?

Thanks for the info!

SLA does look nice! Is the final product as "strong" as an ABS extruder printed version?
Also. As I'm a beginner in this (and the 3D drawing stuff), is a SLA not to extreme to start with?
Till now I was only thinking ABS.

I also see that you have some multirotors.
This is also one of my hobbies. I've got two 180 and two 250's here using NAZ32. (all mini's and homebuilt)

Love racing FPV with them :-)

Its not about stronger.

The material wont break but the layers will get separated from each other on a extruded printer. ( this occurs less fast with a sla as you print layers and not lines )
My 1st sla printer parts where made on a extruder ( tooth paste system ) and they broke with not much tension on it. So i would not worry about material breaking but about how strong are my seams. as
thats is the weakest part. So how you arrange your print lines is important to.

https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/phot ... 5994623346

I think the best advice i can give is start drawing today, get familiar with 3d stuff!
and then try some services like :

https://www.3dhubs.com/

And find out what suits your quality best. 3d hubs is a space where people offer 3d printservice on their own model 3d printer ( al kind of types )
Also make sure you understand there are loads of things to know before you buy. Without knowing what you want to do with the printer its hard to give you a good advise.

The downside of resin printers is that it can be messy, and resin is kind of toxic, so gloves are needed.....
But the advantage is speed.... on a Sla you can print one owl in 20 mins, or fill the whole platform with owls and it still takes the same 20mins
where extruders print you one in a hew hrs and multiply that if you want more.

Then there is resolution, sla is superior in its resolution ( depending on your source and size )

Have a look at the pics at the 2nd post.

FPV flying is kewl, just like dannymetal and borrisb :O)
But i dont have that much time to fly, and i certainly cant fly that goood.

I do have a f550 with 3d gimbal and 2 persons setup, and waypoints and stuff,
a hex spider complete drawn by myself ( milled on my home made cnc machine ) and a 4 rotor mini thats still needs to up one day :O)
Small ones are naze32 to, but its all about time and space with all these new regulations. ( no not my gf )

Yes i know it is not hit print and go.
I have a co2 laser, 2 actually and a cnc milling machine.
It took me a while before i got the hang of it, tweaking with the settings etc etc.
Still am busy with playing every time , especially when i haven't used it for a little while i have to think what to do here and there :)
Reason i have never looked furher into 3d printers is because i did not like the extrusion machines.
And the SLA machines are to expensive, but now when seeing this it could be something.

Drawing in 3d is also another thing that i'd have to learn first.
In google sketchup i can make some simple stuff but thats about it.
I must admit that i did not given it much time and effort to learn yet :)

What would that projector cost that you use ?

Kewl so together we can start fablab purmerend! :D
I use the acer h6510BD wich is about 659,- listed and it also shows your movies on the wall.

The whole trick is the wavelength of the dlp beamers, as the white light makes the resin go hard...
So the distance from your beamer to the resin is important, you want it as close by without loosing your focus.
and you dont want it to close because you will lose size.

Not sure on the progress but at the time i was active in 3d printing the guys at the mentioned forum where experimenting with different ways, like near uv lasers and lcd mono screens with a uv source.
Like in cnc, and laser cutting there are some do's and donts you can learn by trial and error. Like supports, dripping holes etc.. :D

Haha , who knows :)
Machines are at the moment still at my parents house.
Need to move them to my house in Purmerend, if they are there you can come by if you like :D

You write, at the time i was active.
don't you use the machine that often anymore ?
What i wanted to do is make molds and stuff for my jetski, car lcd screen holders, etc etc.
But 3d art is still the thing that stops me.

Hmm so many options.. So many choices... I'm now even more lost in the jungle of 3D printing!

I think that a SLA is maybe an overkill for now, but I'm sure that when I have an "old school" extruder 3D printer I want a SLA :-)
I was looking at some Conrad 3D printers, and they look okay to start with.

I've uploaded my file to shapeways.com, but they quote me a price which is ridiculous (I think).. Or.. I'm doing something wrong.
The 3D project (an antenna cover for a WiFI and 4G project I made) exists of 2 parts. a dome and a bottom "plug". I've put both parts in one drawing. Not sure if this the way it should be done.
it's only 190mm hight and 100mm wide.

for this i would to save time make it with a lathe.
Use some pipe from lets say PP or PE or another weldable plastic.
Then use a lathe to mill of the round edge and make it hollow.
Same as the bottom part.
Use a heat plate to melt the hollow/top part on the pipe and you are done.

Or use a printer haha, but this probably saves time and money if thats the things you are looking for to save.

This is just a small project that got me going in 3D and maybe printing!

Problem is that I have no one here who's got a lathe, and to get it done professionally it's going to cost me a fortune!

@Vincenttor

Well to be honest, its that i dont have the space... to do my things.
CNC is in my sleeping room with a large dust collector, but still its messy.... 3d printer was in the living room but now its in the closet, just not much time but i am sure gonna use it.
and finish the conversion from topup to bottom up ( larger objects than my resin tank are possible then on the Y axis)

But if you feel like trying the machine feel free.... it still needs some modifcations on the size ( software ) after i upgraded my thread from m8 to reprap standards
or you build your own, stil got enough spares to build another one.

@Noel,

well i guess conrad, or velleman isnt to bad from things i ever read.

From your designs it looks like you want something weather protection for your electronics... ?
i am not sure if printing is the right thing then. Lathe would be great...

I think i would take a standard tube in that size and mill/print the bottom stop and top cap.
3d printing is possible, but you need to support the top of the cylinder. When your abs leave the extruder it is hot
and does need some kind of support else it would deform. Also make sure the walls are thick enough to support the weight.
But they seem seem in proportion with the height. But i am not sure about that. Programms like autodesk meshmixer can support you on these kind of thing.

3d stuff isnt cheap at all.... But have a look at 3d hubs, there might be some one close by with the printer you like to see what quality you can expect.
and most 3d hubbers are enthousiast people, and love to help you out.

Good blog with nice articles to read:

Once again thank you all for the info.
The "dome" will be used outside, so UV might be a problem I guess :-(

I'm going to do some more searching here in the area for someone with a lathe and who will not ask to much for doing the job.
If this is still going to be a problem, than I will contact you pklijnjan :-)

PS. Both the Mankati and the Formlabs 1 plus look great!!
