Tado; another smart thermostat

Post by olof »

I came across this smart thermostat, called Tado

http://www.tado.com/de-en/

What got my interest is that on their website they mention their support for Nefit boilers.
Since Nefit is not really OpenTherm oriented, I contacted Tado to double check. Please see below their reply

Dear Olof,
thank you for your interest in tado°!
You are right, Nefit boilers usually do not use Opentherm, but rather another interface. We are currently developing this one.
At the moment you can install tado° as a normal On/Off thermostat, but you then need to provide an external power source to the tado° box, because it does not have batteries. The new tado° system will be available in November. In the tado° set you will also receive a wireless self-sufficient temperature sensor, which you can place in the reference room of your choice.
We hope to see you soon as a part of the tado° family!
If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask us.
Best regards,
your tado° support team / K. Kotev

Hello,
I noticed on your website that Tado also should work with Nefit boilers (I have one, Ecomline).
Sorry to ask but are you sure? Many, if not all, Nefit boilers have a private protocol. They do not work on Opentherm.
Can you please confirm?
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Olof

Hi Olof, looks good. Hope they will deliver an API. This will help a lot of us with integrating in our own environments. Thanks for the spot!

Tado's reply to the API question:

thanks for posting our product in the Home Automation Forum.
Until now, we just had a few requests to open our API to 3rd parties. If there is a bigger community interested in this, we are happy to provide the information.
If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask us.
Best regards,
your tado° support team / Stefanie Sedlak
So I suppose those interested forum members/readers will need to indicate their API wishes to Tado directly.

For me, with so many 'smart' thermostats being around now, I'm getting confused how to compare them all. I like Tado's appearance, but which one to choose?

Cheers,
Olof
