I started this topic to gather more information about the OpenHAB project. It seems to be a very cool project with a lot of hardware support. Since it is written in Java it is also platform independent.

OpenHAB is a software solution developed in Java and is designed to be absolutely vendor-neutral as well as hardware/protocol-agnostic. It can run on devices like the Raspberry Pi and lets you integrate an abundance of different home automation technologies into one. As it is fully open source and is maintained by a passionate and growing community, it is the best way to make sure that your Smart Home stays flexible in the future and that new upcoming technologies can be easily integrated with it and that you are not trapped in any vendor lock-in.

I`m currently testing it with Ubuntu Server (12.04 LTS) on a Asus EEE box B202 and did not yet succeed in setting up the system with the Asterisk binding.

I'm currently running openhab on windows and linux with rfxom, z-wave, sonos en philips hue.

Once you get the hang of it it isn't that difficult.

BUT automating things is for me a lot more difficult. Like using sunset / sunrise commands to turn off/on lights.

In the past i used sunset to switch lights but it is not always accurate. Therefore i switched to a light sensor which has to report dark for some minutes before switching the light.

@raymon: There is a simple rule which uses the wunderground website. It is described in the openHAB wiki under Samples-Rules.
see https://github.com/openhab/openhab/wiki ... for-sunset.
My doorlight uses a rule based on this one, to switch on daily half an hour before sunset. There are also examples of more complex rules to calculate sunrise an sunset based on your location. In that case it does not depend on the internet connection and the wundergroud website.

I love the architecture of OpenHAB but the only thing stopping me from really using it:

- An easy to use web interface that allow me to do all configuration

There is a web interface available but it's not ideal. Want to focus on the integration, scripts, etc.

Yes, I agree. The architecture definitely seems impressive. Also creating your own webpages using the text editor is doable. Of course it could be easier but flexibility comes with a price.
Only adding devices could be a lot easier.
Also they seem to be working on this for quite some time and even got some java award however the community seems rather small.
Or is it German all the way?
