Controlling heating appliances

Post by MortenHa »

What technology is best for controlling in-house electrical heating? Norwegians has a "clean" electricity production, so many of us use wall-mounted "panel" ovens (won't get into a discussion wether or not this is smart).

Have searched the net in norway, and found several proprietary systems. Using either RF or signalling through electrical wiring (Not X-10). GLAMOX, NOBØ etc.

But don't think any of them are compatible with MisterHouse.

You can choose something like a honeywell, they have an extra input which you can put an x10 device on. Turn it on, and it will heat to a preset value, turn it off and it will go back to normal mode. Or something similar like that. Chronoterm was the term i think.

Almost all of the Dutch heating devices are based on Opentherm protocol. Based on the explanation written by MortenHa I don't think this is gonna work. You need to examine the exact specification of your heating device to know which option is the best for you!

MortenHa, you know what we Swedes thinks about Norwegian solutions. :D
But on the other hand, I also have the same heating at home. At least I think you are trying to describe electrical radiators, common in houses without oil or wood-heating in most of northern Scandinavia.

A big problem with them is that they usually uses two phases, to get 400V, and that limits the amount of regular X10 etc. devices that can be used. (And increases the prices!)

At home I'm re-designing right now to get rid of them by getting a third layer of glass installed to avoid down-draft at the windows and a heat-pump so solve the overall heating.

But, if you still want to use them, look closer at the different solutions that you already looked at and see if you can modify them to get a interface to MisterHouse

Thanx Snelvuur, Bwired, Dowser for useful insight and knowledge :)

Well, seems that a RF unit will give me least amount of hazzle, given the phase problem. But being a newbie I'm not entirely convinced that I know what I'm talking about. Monitoring temperature fluctuations and controlling it, I sense vauge thoughts of two-tank calculus problems, fluid mechanics and Boyle's law. The age of the pre-digital thermostat, where purpose and principles of operation, was easy to understand has definetely changed into something else, this forum should be proof enough of that.

And if my goal is really to reduce my energy consumption, then I should really think long and hard about what I'm doing. Else my setup will be nothing more than some cool gadgets to show off with. It is almost as if I have wasted your time, this is not something I should dabble with as a first project. Come to think of it, the reason I signed up for this board was solve a motion detector problem, which I'm far from solving yet!

To tell you the the truth, I just had one of those episodes where you're just about burst with uncontrollable energy. Reading the misterhouse documentation have had me rambling on about the endless possibilities this tool can provide. But doing a half as* job on environment control, might just end up in a larger electrical bill.

But boy is it fun! haven't had a rush like this since me and my father built the 737 Cockpit. But I'll put the brakes on now. Get my MS13 working just the way I want. Leave temp control to the experts until I feel confident I know what I'm talking about.

I rent an aparment, and won't use money on a heat pump yet. Opted for a good old fashioned wood burning oven (Won't discuss with you if that is smart either [;)])

Thank you so much for your help, home automation will keep my brain buzy for months!!
