Water level meter

Post by Wima »

I want you to tell you about my project measuring the water level of my rain-water barrel. But as always it is not as simple as I aspect to be.

By using a 11Volt/1Amp adapter connecting it with 11 resistors and using 10 reed-contacts it works pretty well.(1 resistor (3,3 ohm, is to reduce the 11 volt to 10 volt) When moving the magnet in front of the reed-contacts, my voltmeter shows the voltage at where the magnet is closing the reed-contact. So I have a input for my RAW-voltage RFXCOM sensor.

But.....if the magnet (water level) is just between two reed contacts the reading is 0 (zero) volt. In that case I would not know if the barrel is full or empty.

Is there a way (perhaps with an event) to tell HS to use the last read voltage ? And since I'm not a programmer, I do not know how to put the reading in HS. It would be nice (like the Temperature and humidity are in oC and %) if the reading could be in Liters. E.g. 2 volt would be 100 Ltr and 5 volt would be 250 Ltr.

Who wants to think with me ?

Not at any help and you probably don't want to here it either... ;-)

Use a pressure sensor instead, Take one from an old waching machine for example. Voltage will be proportional to level.

place it on a oregon scale and read it out with a rfxcom (probably don't want to here that either)

I thought of using the oregon scale, but it isn't water resistant.... [:D]

use a bigger magnet so that always 1 or 2 contacts are closed.
