eastron sdm120 pulse output - how to log?

Hi all,

I've bought an eastron sdm120 power meter. it has a connection / pulse output with 1000pulse/kwh output.
Could someone tell me what the general output on such devices should be? Is that a voltage pulse or something?

Datasheet of this model: eastrongroup.com/uploads/SDM120C%20Sing ... module.pdf
It has two pulse outputs. Output one is fixed at 1000pulse/kwh. I want to log the pulses with an ESP-12E. So I connected terminal6 (ground) from the SDM120 to the common ground with the ESP-12E. Then I connected terminal7 to a GPIO from the ESP12E. I used the same scripts as on this site: thalin.se/2015/05/power-meter-pulse-log ... p8266.html
However it doesn't seem to count the pulses correctly.

Note: I'm not using any phototransistor because I assumed the pulse output of the SDM120 would generate the same kind of signal. Maybe there's where I go wrong. However when searching forums and websites, I can only find pulse counters based on a phototransistor but found little to no information about devices generating their own pulses like the SDM120 and capturing those.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
