According to an article I read in Techno(a magazine spread around tech universities in Holland) the delicate parts are in the little circuitry behind the LED's, those are the parts that seem to break.
The lifespan given seems however to be the lifespan of the LED's themselves....

It's the same as it was with the saving lamps, give it a couple of years. More experience, better production techniques...
