To stimulate the economy and to protect the license-user of a product,
the european commision has a law that indicates that interoperability is required.
(Interoperability definition in ISO/IEC 2382-01: "Information to communicate, execute programs. or transfer data among various functional units in a manner that requires the user to have little or no knowledge of the unique characteristics of those units" )

ICT-law specialist Mr. Victor de Pous has written a white paper regarding this topic (sorry, the document is dutch)
I believe this document clearly indicates that users (or people/organizations that are involved) are entitled to receive interface info
regarding technology and that they are allowed to do reverse engineering.
This document even refers to several lawsuits as an example.
In this forum many times people are having difficulty to collect the right technical interface info (Visonic, Plugwise)
and still this white paper clearly indicates that companies should provide this info when requested.
So..
a) dont be afraid if you do reverse engineering, it is your legal right.
b) any suggestions how we should use this legal right to collect technical info ?
