Effect of home automation

Post by RdP »

Today I had to report my electricity usage to my provider (in fact Stedin)

Our usage went down by about 2.000 Kwh. (16%) We still use 13.500 Kwh a year, but this is a huge improvement (last years it only went up and up)

The main reasons are a number of simpel adjustments:
- automatically shut off (standby) devices.
- The use of a notebook(for Homeseer) and a power efficient NAS (I had a 'normal' PC which used about twice a much power, 24 hours a day)
- Replaced almost a light bulbs with energy savings bulbs
- Shut off my floor heating pump, when not in use.

A number of these actions where implemented during last year, so effectively it would be even better (next year)

I don't what the effect will be in euro's, but the ROI(return of investment) of (at least a part) homeautomation devices is clearly justified.

Best regards,
Rien

16% reduction is a great improvement. But 13,5 kwh is still a lot (assuming you don't live in a castle). What makes your energy bill so high? You cook on gas of electricity?

Does the TPG work on sunday......

I am waiting for my report.
I think my power usage is dropped with approxamatly 1500Kwh.

My main power reductions:
- Plugwise: switch off my av system.
- Switch of a HP server, and run plugwise, mail etc on a nas.
- Led lights.

Rien,
Thats a good reduction.
I'm sure more is possibile.
My usage dropped in the last years from 6500 to 4500 now. This is still a bit high, 4000 is my gaol (I have no gas)
I update my usage every 6 month to my supplier Greenchoice. Result is no big fluctuations in my electricity bil
In a google sheet i update the usage more frequently
Excel will count the number of days an show the difference.

Hi Jeroen,

I have three kids, all with computers, gaming consoles and LCD TV on their rooms, my own computers, TV in nearly every room, a jacuzzi, airco electrical cooking, american fridge, diswasher, etc....

I don't see any changes to make big improvements anymore otherwise than switching devices off permanently :P
