[Animo Check] Smart metering readout hardware (P1 port)

This is a topic to check whether there is interest in smart metering hardware. As far as I know there are no standard solutions available to do a local readout of the P1 port.
There is the DIY route of course, but I think it would be nice to offer a standard solution. My current idea's for this hardware project:
  • RJ11 port, to connect to the P1 port on your smart meter
  • Support for the B101 companion standard: http://www.energiened.nl/_upload/bestel ... l%20P1.pdf
  • Both a wired (LAN) and wireless solution (WiFI, RF?), initial version LAN based.
  • Open API
  • Standard V5 micro USB power supply
  • Plugins for popular home automation software systems
  • Data storage (?)
In case there is enough interest for such a solution, I will start the development on this hardware project. Please share your thoughts!

Update: To clarify, the P1 port is available on most smart meters available this year (prioriteitsplaatsing).

I'm interested.
No smart meter yet.

I don't have a smart meter yet; but if I would, yes, I'd be interested.

very much interested, count me in, no smart meter yet
I did not apply for one yet because there is no solid (rs232, Lan) solution to monitor it :)

In a couple of weeks Enexis should be installed the Kamstup 684-31A(J2C3081-GPRS). There should be an P1 port on it, so count me in please.
RF/Bluetooth should not be necessarry for me.
What do you think about the costs of this project, for us?

I'm interessted. I've a KAMPSTRUP 382JxC energy meter with a UNIFLO G4SMV gas meter connected to it. A wired connection would be fine for me, as my router is next to the meters.

There will be a number of P1 interfaces on the market when the roll-out of smart meters will get into volume. Most of them will be complete with hardware and energy management software either on PC, smartphone or a dedicated display. Quby and Plugwise has already P1 interfacing but indeed closed systems.

It is similar to the devices already on the market to read out the classic energy meters like Enymate or Wattcher. It is not a big business special doing the marketing by yourself and those companies may not survive. A better business model is to promote the product together with an energy provider (Eneco,Nuon,Essent, etc) .

It is nice to have P1 interface hardware with an open API structure ... it may trigger apps development and they will provide all kind of creative energy management applications.

So my specs are

• Interface to the P1 port
• WiFi - so no extra interface is needed on the host site, but it requires key entry
• Hard wire Ethernet (option)
• Zwave module (option may be later) - it requires a zwave interface on the host site but it may be combined with home automation. Don't consider Bluetooth !
• Power supply based on 5V USB
• Storage of data likely 1-4 weeks (in case the host is not on-line and not collecting data in realtime)

You may have a basic version with only WiFi (as cheap as possible) and an extended model with multi interfaces
The first version no storage yet just a read out of the actuale values.
Provide toolkits for popular domotica platforms like Homeseer, Vera, etc
Don't make it too complex and think modular

Also check what is going on on the market - May be the manufacturers of smart meters will come with interfaces see:

good luck

Thanks for the feedback.
About the costs: I have no idea yet. I am not looking to make a big amount of money on this project. I will have some more information on that once I have a BOM (Bill of Material)

Henk, I like your idea about WiFi, but it's also a big costs booster. WiFi modules are not cheap at all. Standard USB (Micro) is a good idea. Z-wave is also expensive due to the very expensive development kits.
Regarding storage, this would be possible but is there a big demand for it? I guess most people will use a separate system to store information.

I have updated the feature list based upon the feedback. I think I will go for a LAN (wired) version as a start.

Agree fully, Lan, no local storage is a very good way to start, for myself i dont need anything else :-)
Count me in for the first order!

I think I'm going to wait a while before getting a smart meter.
Just got a mail from the gas/electrical company that the meter they install in my region only outputs kWh.
The meter they use is a Kamstrup (382 162).
If they don't change the output to for example 3 decimal places it is useless.
