What router / switch to get (part 2)

Okay.

I'm still not sure what to get, and today again I had a lot of shit with the current setup (causing packet collisions). I needed to reset all the routers / PC's to get it to work again.

This is how I have things setup at the moment (see below)

Maybe you could give more details about your IP number plan and what applications you want to make available via the Internet. I have only one public IP address, but make several applications available on the Internet via a reverse proxy using a sort of virtual hosting.

How is your cabling? Most collisions are due to bad cables.
Also do you use NAT behind NAT?

Most switches used at home have no layer 3 capability and thus no mac address. These switches are just "dumb" layer 2 devices.

Cabling is all good quality CAT 5 (twisted pair / 4 pairs cable), and no NAT behind NAT is used (as far as I can see it)
I think that the Linksys at the ground floor is a bit dodgy (acting weird). Sometimes I can access the 'Port Triggering' page (not used), and sometimes I can not (it just shows a white page).

I was afraid of this. I guess I need to stay with a router

Will try to re-flash it, and see if it's any better.

I had a setup that looked alot like yours and i had alwasy trouble with running a squeezebox. Now i moved and in the new setup a replaced all ald switches/routers etc by decent brand 10/100/1000 switches and tada suddenly everything went a lot smoother. I have only one dhcp server and that is the one that's build in the modem/router. I use preasigned ip adresses for printer accesspoint servers and that kind of stuff.

The switch is a 3COM 4226T and the routers are Linksys BEFSR81 (both). I think that the switch and the routers are from a decent brand.
I do not have access to the modem (it's a Telsey CPL 100 single fiber modem).

What new routers did you buy?

I have to following routers/switches:

- Cisco ASA 5505 (firewall)
- Asus WL500Gp V2 (asterisk server)
- Linksys WRT54GS (access point)
- Asus gigax 8 ports
- Asus gigax 5 ports
- Zyxel P-2602H-D1A internet router

Linksys and 3com should be just fine, what firmware are you running on the linksys devices? dd-wrt?

Hi Maarten,
Both linksys devices have the original last available firmware (2.51.3)
I do not think that the dd-wrt firmware will work on a BEFSR81 (it's not a Wifi router)

linksys wap4400N

seems back to the first, cable....
Silly q, did you use pin 1,2,3,6 etc on the rj45 for connection?

Okay.

I found the problem that was bringing the network down.
In the Linksys BEFSR81 you have an UPnP forwarding option to forward ports like port 80 to a webserver port 21 to FTP, and many more port.

The options on this 'UPnP forwarding' page are preset. All you need to enter in the preset port table is the IP it needs to go to.

I was using this option to forward the needed ports, as this is the normal way to do this.
For some reason this does sometimes work, and sometimes not.

Some days ago I removed all the UPnP forwarding ports, and remade them in the "Port Range Forwarding" section.
The range forwarding for port 80 is not really a range as it's set to 80:80 > ip of web server.
Same thing for all the other posts that I need to forward.

Anyway. To keep it short, everything has been working great for some days now
