0-10V cable

Post by canrulz »

Hello,

I was wondering if UTP cable was enougth to use as a cantrol cable for electronic balast 0-10V. Length is arround 20m.

Would like to use it as control cable from knx device to electronic balast. Checked specification of device, looks that it should be ok.

Called local Hager office, the guys said that they recommend regular electric cable 1,5mm2. And he thinks that utp cable will be bad for it. But when I was talking to him started to think that he doesn't know what he is speaking about.

UTP cable is already there and replacing the cable would be rather hard as wall is ready to paint and drilling it for new cable is not really nice thing to do ;)

But well of course would be even worse to drill painted wall after if UTP cable doesn't work ;).

According to some spec-sheets I found, 24AWG UTP cable is rated at +/- 300V DC (max).

So the 10V you are planning to use should work perfectly. It all depends on the amount of current that will be flowing.

At an average DC-resistance of 10 ohms per 100 meter it is easy to calculate the amount of power dissipated in the cable.

Just to be sure, fire is always terrible and dangerous!, why don't you take another piece of cable, same lenght, but not in walls and you apply the power you need and test it, let's say for some days? Simple test , but real test. Have a good job. Lorenzo

UTP cable should work fine. When used with power over Ethernet (POE) 4 wires are used and the amount of power per pair for UTP is 18W. So if you combine all 8 wires you should be able to send 72W into the wires and counting for loss you will recieve arround 60W at the end. Max Length of a UTP cable is arround 100m.

Found abb device description. Looks like it should be fine.

One ballast needs 2mA
