Marmitek X10 dimmers energy saving

Post by harmdelaat »

Hi all,

I have a simple question:

Is a lamp using less engery than it normally would, when it is dimmed using a X10 LD11 module?

I heard my electrician say that it does not matter wether you dim a light or not. According to him it still consumes the same amount of energy. But then I read the opposite here: http://www.rietveldlicht.nl/artikel.php?art_id=3555 (sorry it is in Dutch!).

Can you help?

Thanks!

Hello,

Yes a dimmer helps to save energie
if a dimmer is set to 50% with a lamp from 100 Watts the energy you use is about 65Watt.
You can test it your self with a multimeter.

If you can't measure it, you still can experience it:
All energy you put in a lamp, will be dissipated in warmth (physics).
If you dim a lamp to a lower level, less warmth is radiated.
This is something you can feel directly. (Don't burn your fingers!)

There is almost no extra heath radiated by the electronic circuit of your dimmer.
Normally a triac is used to switch a lamp on and off at the frequency of the power-line (50/60Hz).
Switching (on & off) means NO current when OFF, NO voltage when ON for the triac.
In other words:
When there is no voltage over- or no current through a triac, no power (energy) is dissipating.
Only a very small time during switching from one state to the other, some power is lost.
This explains the example of 15% energy loss in the story of esschenk.

I have 6x 50W 230Vac halogen lamps in my living, according to my scientific calculator that would be 300W.
By use of a dimmer I enjoy pleasant warm light at less than 100W (total).
The reason for not using 2x 50W without a dimmer is because of the sphere of this warm light.
(Something that is yet still very difficult to do with LED's)
My hope is that LED technology can offer a full replacement soon, so we can really save energy ;-)
