Automating staircase lighting

This is a project I didn't really plan to do, but since we're in the middle of renovating our staircase (not just the stairs, but also the walls, banisters and all) I thought it was a good idea to throw in some serious Home Automation, to make the hard labor that had to be done more exciting

The main Home Automation part involves lighting the stairs with LED strips, being able to control each LED strip independently, lighting the stairs only when needed and in a somewhat unusual but certainly funny way (I think ).
