powering up PC remotely

Hello,

since a while ( around 3 years )
i use remote desktop, from vacation adres.
for settings of webcam, e-mail etc.
but to do that youre PC need to be on ( duh )
but with a 850 watt power suplly the price goes fast ( 24/7 ).

so is there away to powerup the PC from remotely?

I dont think your pc will use the full 850 wat though, but you can power up a pc remotely but in most cases you need a seperate machine again which can send a signal to it to boot up. (chak has experience with this)

p.s. resize your avatar, it now loads a big picture into a small frame..

i know it will not use the full 850 watts.
but got 2 graphic cards from 160 watts each
my CPU is 145 watt
4 HDD's and 3 USB hdd's
fans.

yeah, i know about the avater, didn't had another on stock

Isn't WOL (Wake On Lan) something you could use?

I use it here too. I first open a VPN tunnel to my router and then send the magic packet to power-up the PC remotely.

Is your PC connected directly to the internet, of through a router?

Did you measure that? We get your point, but I doubt if your PC dissipates more than 100 Watt when it's not being used actively.

Most modern PCs can be switched on over the network by sending them a 'Magic packet'. However, this is not a TCP/IP packet and hence cannot be routed. I suppose there are broad band routers on the market with an externally accessable administration web page that allows you to send those packets, but since it's more likely to be a more professional router I don't think they come cheap.

But if all you want to do is peeking in your house, why not using a dedicated IP camera (or a regulag camera with a video server) instead? Mine do about 15 Watt each, including SpeedDome camera...

If you have another PC what is always on like homeseer PC or another device with WOL support you can send the magic packet. Also via Internet is this possible..

I'm doing this with Homeseer.
Irtrans Ethernet have build in WOL (www.irtrans.de)

He made a board Red Borito. It's a board wich you can acces with a internet connection, and you can boot up 4 pc's order other devices.

Simplest:
Setup a SSH server in your LAN, forward through your router.
Then: Login, "/usr/sbin/wol -i 192.168.1.255 AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF"

(You can do SSH in Linux, but also with Cygwin for Windows)

More challenging, but with webaccess:
Do it like this guy did: "Hmmm ok, well I solved this issue by setting up a port forward which forwards to the broadcast address of the router (Which sends to all ethernet interfaces) then wrote a PHP script which I have hosted on website accessible only on vpn, the PHP script uses socket functions to send the magic packet to my public IP then my router sends that packet to the broadcast address. Works nice."

best thing to do is change power management to everything very low after a certain amount of time and leave it on. easiest sollution.

This bord has 4 relays's so you can remotly start 4 different computers. Or use the relays for other things

I agree looks cool..but what can this device do more than
pstools can do?

you still need a device for accessing the webpage?

That's right you need a device (pc, PDA, GSM) to acces the red borito. You connect it to you router. 1 of the relays you connect to the powerbutton of the device you remotely want to start.

Then you can remotely start from over the internet you pc, Coffeemachine etc.

if it does x10 it would do the same thing too..

but WOL would have been nice too.. then again there are enough ways to get the job done, this is one of them (i would prefer WOL, instead of putting cables to my power button though)
