routers, whats a good one... ?

Post by r_255 »

Yesterday my router broke freecom fsg3 down, and thats no fun at all.
End Resulting is a un controllable house!

I tried to replace it with a old asus wl500g wich does not work because there is no reasonable way to forward ports.
Even setting my hs server as DMZ does not do. Hstouch does not connect or disconnects after it got connected.

Wich makes me wonder what routers do you guys use... are there any brands or types that are most populair ?

I have been looking at this model :
http://www.routershop.nl/products/route ... router.htm

But just wondered or there are any good sugestions or expierences to share on brands or devices.

thnx in advance,

Robin

Hi Robin , i use a 55 euros router from Linksys (http://www.eprice.it/Router-Wireless-LINKSYS/s-773065) and it works. it's a broadband router because my xdsl is a something like a WI-MAX(?) connection (aerial connection with antennas). Then i use another router , but setted as a simple access point to extend the wifi signal in the house. The internal lan is a Gigabit.

I use the cheapest available sweex router (12 euro)
It has everything you might need, atleast what i need
Port forwarding dmz, accesspoint firewall, security and much more.
It is doing it job longer then an other 3 times more expensive router that i bought at the same time.

I use the Vigor 2820.
Be sure to buy a gigabit version.
The Fritzbox has the nicest features and used a lot among the members.

Hey Drmacchi,

i am familiar with these and even got the wap54g here hanging in my network somewhere.

But with these new speeds on cable ( upto 120Mb ) here in holland this router is going to limit the speed.
i have 3 wireless accespoint so the wireless option is not really needed.

its like i have about 20 devices that are connected thru a 3com 24ports switch and 2x asus gigbit 8 port switch.
so most logical to me is to choose for a gigabit router.

thanx.

Hi Robin , the incoming port is a 100mbit RJ45 and you have 120 ! incredibile , Italy is like Flinstones Movie compared to it..... , but i can not find a broadband router with 1gigabit incoming port ! (all 100). The best way could be a little linux ditribution with routing like ebox or coyote or similar on basic hw (even a pentium II!) with a good lan card like a 3COM gigabit and a gigabit switch?

I too have got a Draytek Vigor 2820. It offers a lot of features often found on much more expensive routers, even thou this isn't a very cheap one either.
I've had few issues with it. With the previous firmware version I had to drive home during lunch time a couple of times to reset it, but the latest version is rock solid; I had to reset it once, but I doubt if the router was the cause of the cause of the problem.
