Need new small "powerful" PC

Post by Noel »

For one of my new projects here I need to get a small powerful PC.
I've got 4 EEE boxes here B202 (Intel Atom N270) and EB1012 (Intel Atom 330), but they are not powerful enough for the job.

The new PC will be located in the garage, and used as a media encoder server (running Windows and Adobe Flash Media Live Encode).
Anyone here who can suggest a nice low power (and low priced) system with enough CPU power?

Nowadays with those demands a core I3 on an H55-mobo is generally chosen if I'm not mistaken...

Dell Laptop Vostro 3500
i5 with 4 gb Memory, 320 GB HD

Low usage high power...no need for monitor and UPS.

Price is a bit high +/- 800 euro

Kijk.. Dat is het betere werk.

Ik heb geen blueray nodig, en de kast maakt niet uit. Ding staat in de garage.
De Intel i5-680 is misschien een overkill, maar extra CPU power is altijd goed.
4GB ram is een must.

Zit er al een video kaart op de Gigabyte H55M-UD2H? Ik kan het nu even niet vinden.

Apologies for my curiousity and off-topicness, but can you reveal a bit more about the new projects? :)

Sure.

I'm using it to encode some live webcam streams, and stream them to my FMS server that is located in a DC.
I used to do this with the Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft, and this did not use so much CPU power.
Adobe Flash Media Live Encode needs more CPU power for the same task(s).

If you can read German: 16 W Core i3 530 Komplettsystem @ Standard V.

The Dutch C't of September 2010 contains a test of a number of H55 motherboards and a Q57 motherboard. The latter is an intel board and has some nice remote access features, including access to the bios via vnc. Seems handy to me when the pc is located in the garage.

I've bought a new Dell R210 server. The server only uses about 40 watt.

I'm at the moment instralling Debian Lenny and VMware on it.
Will report back when it's online and fully used.

Not really small, but i have a Netgear Readynas Pro NAS.
Last week i found a site with a howto on how to install VMWare server on the Readynas.
The system is running with 5*1 TB harddrives in a raidconfig (Netgear propriatry).

http://www.readynas.com/?cat=24

The CPU is a Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2160 @ 1.80GHz
Running now with 3 Gb RAM.

The complete system is using about 90 watts.

Before this setup i had the readynas using 70 watts, a VMWare server (ATom D510) with 30 watts and a Homeseer PC with 30 watt.

So i am "saving" about 40 watts.....

(plus that the former homeseer pc can be re-used for my wife as an internet pc (the old system is using about 80 watts idle and 130 watt in use))
