where to buy Receiver with dry contact (relay) switch?

Post by pbrand »

I want to switch my airco on/off using zwave. However all receivers I can find are used to switch 220v devices/lights/dimmers.

Does anyone know where I can order a receiver which has a dry contact (relay)?

As an example of what I need I found the Evolve LFM-20 on the internet. But have no clou where to order this in the Netherlands.

It is the Merten 507001 and there seems to be a alternative, the Merten 507501. Just do a Google and you will find several shops who sell it.

Thanks for the response. I see it's simpler than I thought.

I could also use a shutter switch I gather. For example http://www.duewi.de/index.php?productid=37344. It's quite a bit cheaper than the Merten stuff.

Are you sure you can use a shutter switch, because the output will be switched off after a short time ... ?

Find out what the Amp rating is of your airco ....or the watt use divided by 230 ... and compare specification of the Amp rating of the Zwave on/off devices - i think it is common for an on/off switch to handle at least 10Amp and heavy duty devices will switch 16 Amp. Don't use dimmers they use solid state switching and are limited to 1-3 Amp. and not suitable to switch motors.

According to the manual of the Düwi, you can set up the shutter switch so that the output will not be switched off at all.

The Amp rating of the Airco is not relevant in this case, because I do not want to switch the Power of the airco. Instead I want to switch it using a dry contact connected to a circuit board which is installed on the airco for this purpose.

Ok, i understand it -I would call it a potential free contact ....... you can use also a 230V relay - see Conrad for product availability ...but including holder will add Euro 10 to your Zwave module

Potential free contact and a dry contact are one and the same thing :) Both names can be used. But I'm glad it's clear what I mean.

I'm not a very technical guy (but a software developer) so I wouldn't have a clue where to look at Conrad and how to connect this to a Z-Wave product. Perhaps it would be best if I just use the shutter switch which seems to be Z-Wave component and relay in one.

it is possible to change a normal 220 switch into a dry contact. You would have to open the switch and disconnect the 220 input and output. it's mayby too much for you but maybe someone in your neighborhood knows how.

Thanks for the tip, but alas I have no aquaintances who can perform such tasks.

The price difference between a normal switch and a shutter switch is not that large, fortunately. So I have ordered a Düwi shutter switch.

Thanks for all the help!

Update for the interested few who are trying to achieve the same:

I have installed the switches for the ventilation and the airco and everything is operating nicely.

For the ventilation I have a Düwi switch which turns the ventilation on/off. And a shutter switch for the fan speed.

Switch neutral --> low fan speed
Switch position 1 --> medium fan speed
Switch position 2 --> high fan speed.

For the airco I also have a Düwi shutter switch.

Switch neutral --> Airco off
Switch position 1 --> Airco in Heating mode
Switch position 2 --> Airco in Cooling mode

I am quite happy that the shutter switch can indeed be used as two separate potential free contacts. Mutual exclusive of course, but that's not a problem in this case.

It's a bit tricky because you can't tell in which state the switch is. So you always have to make a few extra switch movements to 'calibrate' it. But that behaviour resides in a script anyway so it's no big deal.

If you want details on how I connected both the on/off switch and the shutter switch together, let me know :)

I think device "Poll" will give the latest status...
You can do a poll after status change.
